No history of the motion picture business could ever be complete without a thorough discussion of Carl Laemmle, Sr.(1867-1939) Said discussion is well beyond the allotted space herein. From his initial foray(s) in purchasing a Chicago Nickelodeon named the White Front, (due to its white washed exterior) to his establishment of one of the first film exchanges in the industry….The Laemmle Film Service, to his nascent stab at film production via the Universal Film Manufacturing Company, which later led to the merging of other production entities to finally form Universal Pictures. The scion of the business was his son Julius (Jr.) Laemmle.(1908-1979)…a wonderfully prolific producer, and as such, hundreds of Universal Pictures carried his name as producer. Laemmle Sr. successfully fought Thomas A. Edison’s film “trust” for many years, finally achieving his “freedom” to be totally independent via a Supreme Count ruling. A unique and most fascinating man, given to untold charities costing millions of dollars……….time spent educating oneself about Sr. Laemmle, and the Laemmle era of Universal Pictures, will be time well spent.
